
A Journey in Time
Every year tells a story of creation, discovery, and the quiet evolution of my art. These records trace the path I’ve walked through exhibitions, inspirations, and moments that shaped the world I continue to paint and sculpt.
2025
I presented two of my key sculptures, Meditation on Mandala and Cosmic Wave, alongside three of my Shunya paintings at the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi.
I exhibited sculptures and paintings at Kalasutra at The Arts House, Singapore.
I held a private show with Sanchit Arts, titled Icons/Elements. A few of my sculptures were exhibited at the Indian Museum, Kolkata
2024
I exhibited my One Note of Zen collection at Snowball Studios, Mumbai, organised by Gallery Art & Soul.
I created the sculpture Fragrance of the Rose for private collectors.
I held a solo show, The Journey, at Salar Jung Museum, Hyderabad.
2023
My copper sculptures Garuda and Zen Forest were installed at Bikaner House in the exhibition Us and Nature.
Shambhala, an exhibition of sculptures and paintings, was presented at the India Art Fair, New Delhi, by Sanchit Art.
I exhibited my works at Kalasutra 2023 at The Arts House, Singapore, presented by Phi Events and Sanchit Arts Gallery.
My sculptures Wings of Eternity, The Conference of the Birds, and The Meditators were installed in a prestigious collection in Abu Dhabi
2022
My sculptures Icarus and Shunya were acquired by the prestigious art collection of Whitman College, Walla Walla, USA.
In the exhibition Moulded Magic, curated by Sushma Bahl for Chawla Art Gallery, my Meditator sculpture was the pièce de résistance.
I addressed a gathering of lawyers at the Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas auditorium in Mumbai
2021
My sculptures were exhibited at an event presented by DLF at The Camellias Club in Gurugram.
2020
I created a monumental calligraphy installation at the Institute for Liver and Biliary Sciences in New Delhi, inaugurated by the President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind.
My book Zen Inklings was released at the Jaipur Literature Festival.
2019
I exhibited sculptures and paintings, Roaring Sea and the Still Mind, at The Oberoi Hotel, Gurugram, and later at the Habitat Centre in New Delhi.
The show was later exhibited in Los Angeles by Arushi Arts.
A selection of my works was displayed at Falkenstern Fine Art in Sylt, Germany.
2018
I presented Wings of Eternity, a multimedia event with an aerial dance by Isha Sharvani and my live gestural calligraphy, at the Royal Opera House in Mumbai.
My book Zen Whispers was released at the Jaipur Literature Festival. I did an art residency at St. Moritz, sponsored by the Reine Victoria Hotel.
I created MA, a 1.6 kilometre-long painting on the beach in Puducherry.
I painted Roaring Sea – Still Mind during a peace conference at Tapovan Ashram, Normandy, France.
My exhibition Zen Whispers was presented at the Sutra Foundation in Kuala Lumpur.
2017
I created I AM, an interactive event of dance, music, poetry and live calligraphy in collaboration with Daksha Seth.
My sculpture Meditation on a Mandala was exhibited at the Art Laguna Prize in Arsenal.
My Zen Scrolls with haikus and drawings were exhibited at the National Ethnographic Museum in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
A collaborative sculpture in woven textiles and acrylic with Sarita Handa was on view at Bikaner House in New Delhi.
My works were exhibited at the Visions Show at Deborah Colton Gallery, Houston.
My copper sculpture Meditations on a Mandala was part of the Venice Biennale.
I created calligraphic scrolls on water at Toulouse, France. I did an art residency in Mauritius at Maradiva Resort.
My sculptures were shown at the Swiss Embassy during the art fair in New Delhi.
I created three monumental sculptures in ceramic and copper for Art Ichol, Madhya Pradesh.
I participated in The Inner Path, a festival of Buddhist film, art and philosophy presented by Teamwork in New Delhi.
2016
My series The Five Elements, paintings on the Bodhisattvas, were exhibited at the National Museum of Shanghai.
Zen Space, an exhibition of sculptures and paintings, was held at The Oberoi Hotel in Gurugram and later at the Habitat Centre, New Delhi.
A film on my sculpture The Buddhas Within was screened at Asiatica Film Mediate in Rome and at Matadero, Spain.
Small Works, a show of works on the lotus, was exhibited at Roberta English Gallery in San Francisco as part of Asia Week.
Silent Eternity was exhibited at the Prince of Wales Museum (CMVS) and at the Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai, and later at JW Marriott in Juhu, Mumbai.
My copper sculpture The Buddhas Within was acquired for the permanent collection of the Prince of Wales Museum (CMVS) in Mumbai.

2015
I collaborated with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on a sculpture painting, Om Namo Shivaya, which was auctioned by Sotheby’s for a charitable cause.
My sculptures Shiva and Parvati, along with canvases, were acquired by the Museum of Sacred Arts, Brussels, and exhibited in the show Forms of Devotion in Thailand and at the Shanghai Museum of Modern Art.
I delivered a TEDx talk at IIT Roorkee titled A Flower Does Not Talk.
My works were exhibited in Art Bahrain, where I also delivered a lecture on my practice.
I was invited by the Crow Museum of Asian Arts, Dallas, to speak about my art practice with the museum’s patrons.
2013
I was one of the speakers at the Hero Mindmine Summit in New Delhi.
I created several artworks for the lobby of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Bengaluru and a large mural, Lotus Sutra, for the International Airport in the same city.
I combined my skills as painter, poet, sculptor and printmaker to create Sculpturepaintings, a series exhibited as Transcending Eternity at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai.
2012
I sculpted monumental works including Shiva/Shakti, Rudra, and The Eternal Flight.
2010
Having created Shiva (the destroyer) and Vishnu (the preserver), I completed the trinity with Brahma, the creator as Surya, at T3, Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi.
My sculpture Devi became the central artwork at the Leela Palace Hotel, New Delhi.
I created the Utsav Murti of Goddess Linga Bhairavi at the request of Sadhguru.
I created a monumental sculpture of Vishnu (the Preserver), measuring 23x22x10 feet, for Nita Ambani’s residence, Antilia, in Mumbai.
2008
I was invited to create a lithograph as part of the official Beijing Olympics Portfolio, as the only Indian artist among international artists such as Sandro Chia, Jannis Kounellis and Mimmo Paladino.
2007
This was a time of struggle when the painter in me was drawn to sculpture. The creation of a 12-foot-high copper head of Shiva, Kalyansundara, resolved that struggle.
2006
I created The Cosmic Matrix, a body of work expressing the spiritual, which was shown in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Singapore, Dubai and Antananarivo.
A section of my paintings was shown at The Arts House, Singapore, in a show curated by Amol Vadehra.
My book I Am the Dewdrop, I Am the Ocean, with a foreword by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, was released in Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata.
2004-2005
I created an installation, The Sacred Space, for RPG, exhibited at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai.
I held a solo show of paintings and sculptures, A Floating World, at Tamarai Art Space, London.
I participated in Digressing Domains, an installation and auction for WWF, curated by Sushma Bahl at Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi.
2003
I exhibited Transformation, a series inspired by Zen, in Delhi and Mumbai. These works explored the physical and spiritual forces of cosmic consciousness.
2000-2001
My book The Eyes of The Thar was published by Mapin and released in Delhi, Mumbai, Dubai and London.
My book of haiku La Luna Fugissera was translated into Catalan and published by Bromera Poesia.
1999
My son Ananda was born.
I delivered a lecture on literature and the environment at the World Congress of Literature in Valencia, Spain. I exhibited at Gallery GO, Amsterdam.
1998
I illustrated The Road, a book of poems by Germain Droogenbroodt, with drawings on The Five Primary Elements.
1997-1998
My Zen sculptures were exhibited at Art Today in New Delhi.
I created five monumental metal sculptures for Jindal Centre, Bhikaji Cama Place, New Delhi.
I began my desert series and held solo shows in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, and at Bose Pacia Modern Gallery in New York.
1995-1996
Some of my poems were translated into Spanish and Catalan, and I recited them at international poetry festivals in Altea and Murcia, Spain.
I exhibited calligraphic scrolls, Poems to the Sea, and a series of graphics at El-Sol Gallery, Spain.
1994
I underwent successful brain tumour surgery by Dr. John M. Tew in Cincinnati, Ohio.
I married Amita, a freelance photographer working with development organisations.
1990
I designed the stage for a concert by Pandit Ravi Shankar at Siri Fort Auditorium, New Delhi. My works were exhibited at Espace Pont-Neuf Gallery in Paris.
1986-1989
I held solo exhibitions at Wraxall Gallery, London; Ufundi Gallery, Ottawa; Satori Gallery, San Francisco; Atlantic Gallery, Washington; Viridian Gallery, New York; and East West Gallery, Melbourne.
I worked with modular graphic formats, juxtaposing images to create larger compositions.
1985
My book of haiku, The Broken Wave, was published.
1982-1984
I created charcoal drawings inspired by the hymns of the Rig Veda, published as Vibrations.
I exhibited The Storm in New Delhi, with works entering the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi.
1981
I received the Sanskriti Award.
I was invited to lecture at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne.
1970-1979
I received a French Government Scholarship to study at Atelier 17, Paris, under S.W. Hayter and Krishna Reddy.
Discovering Paul Reps’ Zen Flesh, Zen Bones was a turning point in my artistic journey.
1965
I held my first solo exhibition of graphics at Shridharani Gallery, New Delhi.
1963
I entered the College of Art, New Delhi, where I studied for five years, exploring lithography, letterpress and offset printing.
1951
I lost my father, journalist Deshbandhu Gupta, in a plane crash — a tragedy that left a deep impression on me.
1947
I was born in Delhi on July 18th. My parents, Deshbandhu Gupta and Sona Devi, were freedom fighters who worked alongside Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru.
